Beast of Reincarnation launches Game Freak's first non-Pokémon AAA game
The photorealistic, post-apocalyptic action RPG is out now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC — the studio's first release on non-Nintendo hardware in years, and its first AAA game with no Pokémon in it.
Beast of Reincarnation went live worldwide on August 4, developed by Game Freak and published by Fictions. It's available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it's a day-one addition to Xbox Game Pass on console and PC — priced at $59.99 for players buying it outright.
The game is set in a post-apocalyptic version of Japan and follows a young woman named Emma and her companion Koo as they travel a world devastated by a mysterious blight, searching for the truth behind their circumstances. It's built as a fast-paced action RPG, a sharp turn from the turn-based Pokémon formula Game Freak has built its identity on for three decades.
It's a notable moment for the studio regardless of how the game is ultimately received: Game Freak has spent almost its entire history as a first-party Nintendo developer, and Beast of Reincarnation is both its first release on PlayStation and Xbox hardware in years and its first attempt at an original AAA action RPG without Pokémon attached to it.
